Typekit desktop fonts are synced but the fonts are not working

$

I'm new to Adobe Creative Cloud services and immediate have noticed that Typekit is hit or miss. I have no trouble syncing the fonts on Typekit.com, they show as synced in my CC control panel. Photoshop CC sometimes even recognize the missing fonts as typekit fonts on a PSD load and ask if I want to update the missing fonts with the Typekit fonts, I confirm I do or in general try to use the synced fonts, and it doesn't work – fonts are missing. I restart Photoshop, I restart my computer, I attempt the same thing over and over again. Sometimes it eventually works, but today its not. This is all very frustrating since access to Typekit was one of the main reasons I decided to go on the Adobe Creative Cloud. Please help!

How should a professional business plan look like?

Hi,

How should a professional business plan look like?

My teacher just gave me this sample business plan. Now, the content is alright, but what about the typography? I'm not sure, I'm not really a designer, but I do get the feeling it's not as beautiful as it could be. I take it a business plan should appear serious and controlled, almost conservative, as to show investors that you won't do anything stupid with their money. Also, I remember reading somewhere that the best typography is the kind of typography that goes by unnoticed (e.g. nothing fancy) as to not divert the reader's attention from the actual content.

I don't know, what do you guys say?

Thanks!

Helvetica Neue monotype, linotype or adobe?

$

Hello everyone

I'm doing a job using Helvetica Neue for a client who has specified that it should be from the Monotype foundry. On checking mine (in Quark's utilities) it says what I'm using is a Adobe Systems Type 1 Postscript font. When I looked online to research about purchasing the Monotype version I keep finding it mostly available as either as Linotype or Adobe but Monotype is really rare, other than from 1 US font site. Certain sites imply that Linotype and Monotype is the same !!! Are they so different from the different foundries that text will reflow quite a bit? It's an expense that I can quite do without if I can help it.

In addition I find it very confusing that there is a Helvetica Neue Roman AND a Helvetica Neue 55 (or light and 45 etc) in my drop down font menu. Is this because they are from 2 different foundries that has mixed up in my system? Sometimes when I get work back having used the '55', I find that it's been changed to the 'roman' version and I need to change it back again. I am concerned that if I use the Monotype version it'll add another layer of problem to this existing one.

Another thing is, sometimes you see the font listed as Neue Helvetica, and Helvetica Neue (reversed order). Other times it's spelt as HelveticaNeue with no space between the 2 words and other times there's a space. It's all very confusing. Again is this because thaey are from different foundries?

Lastly, is there a place in InDesign v5 that gives this info in a similar way to Quark's Utilities eg Path, Folder and Foundry etc for easy reference?

Thanking in advance for your help.

Combining Fonts

Assignment: Type out two fonts (A–Z, 0–9) and smash them together, splice their DNA. Take the spine from one, and mesh it with the stems or serifs of another. Create two sets of upper-case letters, and numbers 0-9.

I have googled, YouTubed, searched on Adobe. I'm having a problem figuring out how to "splice" the text and combine it. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Do you know a web site with the following type set available?

Are Helvetica Regular and Helvetica Medium the same font?

We have just added a new computer to our workgroup, and it is using Windows 7.  We removed all of our software from the old computer (which was running Windows XP Pro) and installed it on the new computer (this includes InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop).  We are finding that when we open documents on this new computer that is says the font is missing from any document using Helvetica Medium.  Helvetica Regular is available, though.  Are these just two names for the same font?  Most of our work is in Helvetica and if we change fonts at all, we will have to reproof all of it...which would mean HOURS of work for us. Any help or information would be very appreciated!

Georgia font for smaller font sizes

Minion Pro has a "relative" for smaller font sizes-Minion Pro Caption.

Is there is sth analogous for the Georgia font-a version of it specifically for smaller font sizes.

I searched in Typekit but i found nothing.

As a sidenote, what impresses me more is the fact that typekit does not list at all Georgia-a so usual font found in the web today.

How can that be?

211 OpenType fonts available with Creative Suite

(This message last edited 17 Jan 2004 to clarify details and remove one font from the list.)

Bonus fonts bundled only with the Creative Suite - and not with the individual programs sold separately - are the *entire* Warnock Pro Opticals family. Additionally, the entire Brioso Pro opticals family is offered as an online registration incentive for North American customers, as one of several choices of bonus goodies. If you get both, that's an extra 74 fonts! If you buy the applications separately, you still get 137 fonts, mind you.

If one buys single applications, they come with fewer fonts. To check out the differences, see the comparison here:Robert Levine, "Creative Suite vs. InDesign CS vs. Illustrator CS bundled fonts" #12, 5 Nov 2003 7:58 am"> "Creative Suite vs. InDesign CS vs. Illustrator CS bundled fonts"

Below are the fonts you get in both "standard" and "premium" versions of the Creative Suite (the professional edition does not add more fonts). All of this, including the registration bonus, applies to educational purchasers as well as the regular retail versions of the applications.

Font Licensing for Commercial Use - Video Games

$
0
0

Hello everyone.

I need some SERIOUS help so any advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm currently in the process of Producing a video game which is using Minion Pro (Bold and Medium). I've been trying to call anyone and everyone at Adobe to figure out what I need to do to license this particular font for my game but after three weeks I still don't have an answer.

That said, I've come to understand that if I've bought a copy of Adobe Suite (which includes the Minion Pro font) the license allows me to use the font commercially. Meaning, I can legally use the Minion Pro font in my game.

Is this valid? Can anyone provide insight on this? If not valid, what do I need to do to secure a license?

Help please!

[Guide] How to identify a font

$
0
0

Hello world. Have you ever seen a great font that it's already rendered and it's name is nowhere around? Have you spend a thousand of hours looking for that holy font that finally complete the design you've been working on for months? Have you roll on the floor while crying for hours when you give up to find it?... Well, no more my friends.

Here's a little guide I made and that you can use to always find all the fonts you want to.

1_     To begin, you have to find an image of the font that you want to identify. If the font is selectable text on somewhere, you must move it to an image (taking a screenshot and cutting the text area will work).

At this point you may want to have some considerations:

      • Try to get the text as horizontal as possible.
      • Letters should be around 100 pixels tall in your image. Less could not work.
      • Make sure letters aren't touching each other. Use the zoom tool and edit your images as accurately as you can and, if possible, space the characters apart more than normal.
      • Use as many characters as possible, and use characters that looks unique to that font (diacritics will work greatly).
      • Save it with the best quality (300 DPI, TIFF format, grayscale).

2_     Now, we have to upload our image to the search engine. WhatTheFont by MyFonts is a great choise, but WhatFontis it's fine too. Both works really good, the mainly differences are that the first one is more accurate, while the second one will show a much bigger number of alternative results.

I recommend using both simultaneously and compare results.

3_     Once the file is uploaded, we only have to look among the results 'till we find the correct font.

And that will be all, it's that easy. Once you found your font you can keep looking for similar ones with tools such as Identifontand increase your knowledge. The sky's the limit!

Things to consider

Always remember that this is not magic, so don't expect to always get a result 100% accurate. As long as you keep using images with good resolution and a decent size, you will have more probabilities of nail the exact font.

Also, at some point you'll (probably) find yourself trying to identify an exclusive non-commercial font. In these cases, we must settle for the most similar one (or contact the designer and try to reach an agreement to use his/her creation on our works).

"Universal" font

Hello everybody !!!!

I'm looking for a font that can handles every type of characters, from the latin alphabet till the cyrillic alphabet via the asiatic alphabets (japanese, chinese, ..). I though that Lucida Grande would do it, but apparently not (when I embed this font on my appli, it doens't display correctly the characters..). With a japanese character I though that I would have manage to find it, but unfortunately the russian is craply displayed (with a huge letter-spacing)
So do you know if this magic font exist or how to find it ?

In other case, do you know how to find the character palette on the mac that would list me all the font available on my mac and which alphabet these fonts handle ?

Or maybe a website with fonts and their cover ?

Thanks a lot for any help !!!

FAQ: What font is used by the London Underground (London Transport)

$
0
0
This summer, while on vacation in the UK, I spent a few hours in the London Transport Museum. Surprisingly enough, in their gift shop, two items for sale attracted my attention. One was a book and the other, a collection of fonts!

Every so often, the question comes up on this forum and others as to exactly what font is used in the London Underground. The book in question,Johnston's Underground Type by Justin Howes definitively answers that question and provides quite a bit of background on the subject.

To summarize, the basis of the font used today isJohnston Sans, dating back to 1916. Johnston Sans also had an upper case-only bold face. These two faces were used with various modifications until 1988 when the font was modernized with the release ofNew Johnston, a family of nine typefaces based upon Johnston Sans. The family includes light, light italic, medium, medium italic, medium condensed, bold, bold italic, bold condensed, and stencil weights / styles. New Johnston Medium most closely resembles the original Johnston Sans face in terms of weight and style.

Neither the original Johnston Sans nor the current New Johnston are licensed by London Transport for any external use.

However, at the London Transport Museum (and I believe on-line from the P22 Type Foundry), you can purchase a license and media for P22's rendition of Johnston Sans including three faces - P22 Underground, P22 Underground Bold (uppercase only), and P22 Underground Extras (symbols associated with London Transport over the years). Included on the CDROM are both Type 1 and TrueType versions of the typefaces in both Windows and Macintosh formats. The designs were officially licensed from London Transport. The EULA (End User License Agreement) carries somevery strict restrictions with regards to embedding in PDF or any other file type as well as commercial use of any printed output formatted with these typefaces.

A fairly close (and less restrictively-licensed alternative) to the P22 package or for Johnston Sans and New Johnston (neither of which are available for license) is ITC Johnston, available in Type 1 and TrueType versions in both Windows and Macintosh formats. Fifteen individual typefaces are available including old style figures and small caps, italic styles, as well as light, medium, and bold weights. Alas, they are not (yet) available in OpenType format.

In any case, further information and background is available inJohnston's Underground Type by Justin Howes.

Hello,

I have a PDF which i am trying to edit in Adobe illustrator

When the PDF loads it says: "The font Helvetica is missing.  Affected text will be displayed using a substitute font"

In Adobe Reader, Properties/Fonts the font in question is called:

Helvetica  (Embeded Subset)

Type: Type 1

Encoding: Ansi

I am unable to locate a matching font in the Adobe Store

Does anyone have any ideas as to how to match this font?

(There were two other fonts I was able to match - Helvetica-Bold and Helvetica-BoldOblique because the names matched a font on the font store)

Thanks for your help

Repair a corrupt font?

I have an extensive collection of fonts (60,0000+). Several hundred of them will crash my system when I open one of them in Finder (double-click the font icon). I picked one at random for some serious examination.

I looked at my sample with many font tools. My latest tool was FontDoctor (v5 and v7). FontDoctor reported "no problems found" with my font. Yet the crash persists.

Please suggest a tool that can do a thorough job of investigating and repairing my corrupt fonts.
