Can I automate specialized, detailed, rater-like fonts in PS and ID?

I'm trying to create a mailer for a group with about a thousand members, and the client wants to have each image personalized with the member's name such as you may have seen on those "my name in the picture" calendars. Here's an example for clarification:

http://www.americancalendar.com/intheimage/

The graphic design is no problem, but I'm certainly not getting paid enough to manually arrange every name on the list. I'm sure these companies have some way of automating the process. They must create the "font" then be able to auto-fill the right name/messages, but I can't figure out that workflow in my head. If the names were written in simpler fonts this would be a cake walk, but some of these fonts look more complicated than I know how to easily automate (in the example above, the blocks-of-snow and hay bale fonts, and I think there are environmental lighting and shadow effects on the lilypad and apple fonts).

Creating each of these images alone is well within my ability, but I've never really worked with font creation and, as I said, the automation in this project is throwing me for a loop. Can anyone help me figure this process out? Can I do it with just Photoshop and InDesign?

Identify Alphabet (not particular font)

We are recreating an old package. As shown below, the printed message (whatever it says) appears twice, and the glyphs (mostly) match, so I doubt the red-circled ones are merely distortions or misprints (see explanation below -- I could be wrong).

My first thought was that it was Cyrillic. But there are two glyphs (circled in red) that do not appear in any Cyrillic, or Open Type font glyph sets that I can find. There is another (?) glyph (circled in green) where I am not sure if it is a separate glyph, or a print blob and a glyph.

I have had no luck at the usual suspects; whatthefont forum, etc.

If anyone can point me to a language / alphabet, or a font contining the glyphs I would be very appreciative.

I'm looking for this font (or very similar one)

I would like to know what font this is, or the name of a similar font.

I've already tried with font from an image recognition services and also sites with step by step font identification. It's not a typical serif or sans-serif font, so no luck so far.

After installing Helvetica Neue font onto my PC (Win7) it now appears almost everywhere online in the interface of websites?

I installed Helvetica Neue recently onto my PC and ever since that font is being used on most websites I visit, and even in the google website's troubleshooting settings. Ive also noticed the font used for the number of likes on a likebox on my website has changed and is all being displayed in Helvetica. It is very annoying and I have no idea how to resolve this issue. Here are a few examples:

What does "LT" stand for?

Looking over Adobe's font list (http://www.adobe.com/products/fontfolio/pdfs/fontfolio11_font_list.pdf), I noticed that many fonts have "LT" attached to their names, e.g. "Helvetica LT Std Black."

What does "LT" mean?

Thanks,
Nick

I need help finding a specific Helvetica font.

Hello,

I have a PDF which i am trying to edit in Adobe illustrator

When the PDF loads it says: "The font Helvetica is missing.  Affected text will be displayed using a substitute font"

In Adobe Reader, Properties/Fonts the font in question is called:

Helvetica  (Embeded Subset)

Type: Type 1

Encoding: Ansi

I am unable to locate a matching font in the Adobe Store

Does anyone have any ideas as to how to match this font?

(There were two other fonts I was able to match - Helvetica-Bold and Helvetica-BoldOblique because the names matched a font on the font store)

Thanks for your help

Are Helvetica Regular and Helvetica Medium the same font?

We have just added a new computer to our workgroup, and it is using Windows 7.  We removed all of our software from the old computer (which was running Windows XP Pro) and installed it on the new computer (this includes InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop).  We are finding that when we open documents on this new computer that is says the font is missing from any document using Helvetica Medium.  Helvetica Regular is available, though.  Are these just two names for the same font?  Most of our work is in Helvetica and if we change fonts at all, we will have to reproof all of it...which would mean HOURS of work for us. Any help or information would be very appreciated!

Required fonts for CS2?

I've been searching for a list of fonts the are required for Adobe CS2, but can't seem to find a resource. Does anyone have this information? These would be fonts that belong in the "Reqrd" folder within /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Fonts/ (on Mac OS X).

According to Extensis's Font Management in Mac OS X: Best Practices Guide (7th ed.), there are a handful of Myriad fonts that should not be removed from this folder:

     MyriaBol

     MyriaBolta

     Myriad

     MyriaIta

     MyriaRom

I believe these are PostScript Type 1 files, representing Myriad Bold, Myriad Bold Italic, Myriad Italic, and Myriad Roman. Ironically, my Adobe "Reqrd" folder has no actual fonts inside it. But I did find these font files in my User library fonts folder on my current computer. So they've always been active, but apparently I'd lost track of their origin. Now I'm trying to confirm that these are the files that belong there, and if there were any others that originally belong in that folder as well.

Does anyone have CS2 who could check their "Reqrd" folder? Otherwise, an online resource for this would be much appreciated.

Typekit not publishing font correctly - Regular is showing up as Italic in published page

Typekit font (Source Sans Pro) is not rendering correctly when publishing site from Muse. I know not to expect it to preview correctly (sigh) but it is not publishing. Ex: Source Sans Pro Light 16 point is publishing/displaying in web page as ITALIC, not regular. HELP!

This issue is cross-platform, PC and Mac.

Looks great in Design, Preview all messed up, but PUBLISH shows font as displayed in Preview, NOT as displayed in Design.

HOT TOPIC please!

What goes with Zapfino?

Hi Group,

I recently purchased Zapfino, and I would like to know which non-script
fonts would work nicely as a sub-title or body text. I saw 2 or 3
recommendations on Linotype's site about a year ago, but I cannot find that
article now.

Any suggestions for companion fonts?
Thanks!

Creative Suite vs. InDesign CS vs. Illustrator CS bundled fonts

This is a complicated issue, which I hope can be clarified by this summary.

With InDesign CS by itself, there are 66 fonts, many of which are new for the CS version. Apparently these are included with the educational version as well. This includes fonts from the Adobe Jenson Pro, Lithos Pro, Myriad Pro and Trajan Pro families. See here for a complete list:

Thomas Phinney, "InDesign CS bundled OpenType fonts" #, 18 Oct 2003 12:26 am">Thomas Phinney "InDesign CS bundled OpenType fonts" 10/18/03

With Illustrator CS by itself, there are 102 fonts, about 31 of which do not overlap with the fonts bundled with InDesign CS. This includes fonts from the Chaparral Pro and Charlemagne Std families. See here for a complete list:

Thomas Phinney "Illustrator CS bundled OpenType fonts" 10/18/03

The other CS apps do not individually add meaningfully to the bundled font count.

However, with the Creative Suite as a package, there are up to 211 fonts: the 138 fonts included with the individual apps; the Warnock Pro Opticals set (32 fonts); plus if you register online in the US and Canada, you can download the Brioso Pro Opticals fonts (42 fonts). Note that Brioso is one of several choices you have of registration incentives, and you need to be sure to look for and follow the link! You can get it later from your main store registration page if you miss it the first time, though.

The standard edition and premium edition of the suite have the same font bundle.

Details on the full bundle are here:

Arial Narrow Different Type Font than Arial???

We have a client who restricts our use of fonts, specifically stating that all use "must be 10 point or larger Arial or Times New Roman font type." We frequently use Arial Narrow when developing complex graphics and tables for this client but were recently advised that Arial Narrow is 'another type of font' and unallowable per their instructions. An ongoing (and costly) discussion is taking place.

I always thought that Arial Narrow was a subset of the Font Family Arial. Have I been wrong all these years and must now confess my ignorance???  And are Font Families different than Font Types?

Please help answer this question as resetting everything (and we do not use Arial Narrow in body text for those of you freaking out) will be nightmare as we have page restrictions in this 300 page document also. My thanks in advance is somebody can explain it in a way that even an engineering group could understand. Gofigyyer [who still can't believe I couldn't answer this question after all these years ;-)].

Installing Fonts? Need Help w/Mac OSX

I'm a Graphic Design student and I just bought Adobe Font Folio Education Essentials. My question is, how do I install the fonts? There are no directions. I have a new iMac OSX Leopard (just learning) and not sure where to put the fonts when I put the CD in.

Any help would be great.

Thanks.

Tebuchet screen rendering issues in Acrobat

I have created an information sheet using MS Trebuchet on the Mac in InDesign and exported to PDF. When viewing the PDF the font does not display correctly, some area looks bold. If you change the percentage zoom page size the font changes. It look fine at 130% but at 134% some of the sentences in paragraphs look bold?

Help with embedding Type1 OTF Fonts in Word 2007/2010 docs

Hi,

I purchased a few Adobe OpenType Pro fonts including Myriad Pro and Garamond Pro. I want to use those fonts in Word 2007 and/or 2010 .docx type documents. It works fine while I work on my PC which has the fonts installed. Word recognizes the fonts and I can use them, in the 2010 version even with some OpenType features like ligatures, medieval numerals, etc. However, I have tremendous difficulties embedding those fonts so recipients can actually read and/or edit my documents.

Exporting the fiels into PDF also skips embedding the fonts (at least as long as I use Microsofts PDF Export).

Can someone please tell me:

1) Is embedding of OpenType fonts in Word 2007 or 2010 possible at all?

2) If not, can I trade in the fonts for the corresponding TrueType versions?

3) If that is not possible, is there a way to convert the fonts into TrueType without losing too much of the font quality?

Thank you all for your kind support.

Body text replacement for Times New Roman?

I'd appreciate some suggestions.

I'm typesetting a publication of papers from a university conference (in InDesign CS4).  The publication will be in book format, A5 portrait, and part of my brief is to keep length (ie number of pages) to a minimum - which means many pages dense with unrelieved text.

The source documents are in Microsoft Word and Times New Roman - fairly standard, I imagine.  I find large tracts of Times New Roman laborious and tiring to read, and (possibly by familiarity with it in a certain context) that it tends to look like it was printed out of Word.  I need the end result to look intellectual and business-like, but hopefully to be a little fresher and inviting than I feel Times New Roman tends to look.

So can anyone suggest, please, a replacement face for this purpose?  Perhaps (mindful of copy length) one with similar x-height and width ratio?

Small caps not working in web fonts

Hi everyone,

I'm having a problem implementing OpenType features in web fonts. No  matter what typeface or browser I use—and I've tried several of each—I  can't get the CSS font-face property to listen to  font-variant:small-caps. In every case, the browser synthesizes its own  small caps by scaling the full caps, which of course looks terrible.

The typefaces I've tried with this are all open-source advanced  fonts: Cabin, Cardo, Lato, and Sorts Mill Goudy, all of which support  small caps at least in their roman, regular-weight face. I've used  Firefox 5, Opera 11.5, and the latest build of Iron (Chrome without Big  Brother), all to no avail.

It's worth mentioning that other properties of advanced web  typography, such as automatic ligatures (as well as the font-face  property itself), are all working.

You can see my test page at http://www.utcolmus.org/test.html , and the CSS file at http://www.utcolmus.org/main.css. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Bram
